About Head Models and some examples:

Head models are created by people that specialize in 3D modeling or by software that can take photos and generate 3D models automatically. After the model is created it must be analyzed and data generated so that it can be animated. Inovani has animated models from many different 3D modelers and heads generated from 3D photographs. Se below for examples of heads. Their names are either inherited from their original creators or invented by inovani.

The current requirements to a 3D head model is as follows:

Presently the inovani animation technique works for 3D polygon head models. There must be an opening for the mouth, and the face (the part that moves when talking) must be a connected surface. The teeth must be placed so that they do not penetrate the skin when the face speaks. If included, the normals of the surfaces must point "out" of the model. If the eyes are to blink, there must be holes for the eyes and the eye balls must not bulge out of the eye holes.

Elmo

Elmo was created by Tracy Bezesky at www.contentcreator.com. He was not created in particular for inovani. The 3D model was downloaded as a VRML file and converted to inovani's 3D format that includes data for animation. The advantage with Elmo is that he is very expressive and storing him on file only requires 4KByte. He is easy to animate and can therefore be used on small devices.

Anthon

Anthon was bought from Zygote that delivers ready-made heads. He arrived as a VRML file. He is the opposite of Elmo in terms of size; he is 74 KBytes large.

Cow

The cow was made by Henning Birkeland at www.henningb.com. It was not created specially for inovani, but Henning displayed it on his web-pages to show example work. The cow was found as a VRML file, but is originally created using Maya. This model is so easy to animate that it can run on small CPUs. In our version, the file size is 17 KBytes.

Pig and Horse

These two characters were created by Henning for inovani using Maya and exporting to VRML. The pig is so easy to animate that it can run on small CPUs; it is 17KBytes large. The horse is only slightly bigger - 23 KBytes - it also runs on small CPU computers, but with a slightly lower frame rate or size of the displayed head.

Diana

Diana was found on the net as an illustration in a course on 3D modelling. (These course pages are no longer operating.) Diana is also 17 KBytes large.

Tough Guy

"Tough Guy" was found at the Singular Inversions site as a VRML file. We have borrowed him to check that we could animate him. He is a very detailed model and has a texture. He takes 418 KByte including a JPEG texture.

Digimask heads

Digimask has a great tool for making 3D models from photos. inovani's technology has been integrated with Digimask's and therefore you can automatically create animateable heads from your own photos.

The Digimask / inovani combination not only works for photos of real people, it works for photos of statues and drawings as well.

All the heads below are created with Digimask software and animated by inovani. The only manual work is clicking on about 15 points of reference in the photos using Digimask's user-friendly tool.

Digimask can generate head models in a variety of sizes where the smaller sized easily run on small CPU devices and the larger sized heads look good on very large screens.
